SUPPLY LIST FOR PLEIN AIR WORKSHOPS


GENERAL
  • Outdoor easel, French or metal
  • Palette (the French easel comes with one)
  • View finder (recommend Picture Perfect View Finder which includes value scales)
  • Value scale
  • Umbrella to attach to easel
  • Luggage cart (recommended)
  • Pencils (2B & 4B), sharpener, and erasers
  • Sketch book, 5 x 7 or 8 x 10
  • Camera
  • Proportional dividers ("Prospek" tool, Jerry's catalog #32839)
  • Hand mirror
  • Trash bag
  • Bug spray and sun block
  • Wipe-out tool or small pointed color shaper
  • Hat or sun visor
  • Tote bag for miscellaneous gear
  • Cotton rags and/or paper towels
  • Ruler, 12" is a good size
  • Mahl stick (recommended)
  • Chair or stool (for lunch and breaks)
  • Brush holder
  • Clamps, pliers, and bungee cords (recommended)
  • Soft vine charcoal
  • Palette knife (not a painting knife)
  • 14 Formulas for Painting Fabulous Landscapes available used from Amazon.com (optional, but recommended)

    OIL PAINTING SUPPLIES
  • Liquin
  • Panels, or canvas boards, 9x12 or 12x16, with application of middle tone transparent gray
  • Odorless turpentine or mineral spirits (OMS)
  • Palette cups
  • Brushes: hog bristle filberts (Robert Simmons #42's are good.)

    OIL PAINTS:
  • Permalba or other titanium/zinc white
  • Cadmium yellow light
  • Cadmium orange
  • Cadmium red light
  • Burnt sienna
  • Permanent Madder Deep - NEW COLOR!
  • Ultramarine blue
  • Cobalt blue
  • Thalo or viridian green
  • Black, Chromatic Black from Gamblin is best, or Ivory Black

    WATERCOLOR SUPPLIES
  • Palette with deep wells
  • Watercolor pads (I like Arches Cold Press)
  • Incredible Nib
  • Salt
  • Brushes, a variety

    WATERCOLOR PAINTS, same as oil colors plus:
  • Chinese white or white Gouache (opaque watercolor)
  • Chromium oxide green, Quinacridone red
  • Sap Green
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Cerulean Blue
  • Winsor Violet
  • Paynes Gray
  • Raw Sienna
  • White plastic eraser
  • Incredible white mask, or other masking fluid
  • Small spray water bottle (overall size about 4 ½ inches)
  • X-Acto knife with sharp blade #9 or #11
  • Masking tape
