Since 2004 I have participated in "Paint Annapolis," the annual plein air painting event sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association (MAPAPA). This juried competition requires the twenty-five selected participants to paint outdoors in and around a specified area of Annapolis two complete paintings in three days and hang them on the fourth day for judging and a reception. Below are four of my paintings from this competition.
Growing up in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, I connected early on with its historical significance. The 18th and 19th century architecture of Georgetown in DC, the Maryland towns of New Market, Annapolis, Laytonsville, Brookeville, Burkittsville, Middletown and Frederick, and Alexandria VA, continue to fascinate me.
The two recent paintings at right were done plein air. I painted "Main Street Antiques" in New Market, MD and "Locust Lane" in Washington Grove, MD. I love these old homes, their details, their history, and their perceived stories. Each home was built in the 1800's and have weathered both good times and bad.
