NUSS NEWS/PLEIN AIR WORKSHOP

I have just returned from Wayne PA, on the main line west of Philadelphia, where I competed in the 3rd annual "Wayne Plein Air Event"…thirty juried plein air artists from the region. I was pleased and honored to win a JUROR'S AWARD for the painting shown here, called "Around the Corner."

On May 26, I travel to Cumberland/Frostburg (MD) to participate in another plein air competition…"Mountain Maryland," painting Allegany County, Cumberland and Frostburg. It is sponsored by the Allegany Arts Council…again thirty juried plein air artists from as far away as California will paint and turn in two plein air paintings for judging by noon on Saturday. The event culminates in an exhibition at the Roper Gallery at Frostburg State University at a reception on May 30th.

I have also been accepted into the prestigious "Plein Air Easton" for the third time, taking place in Easton and Talbot County on the Maryland Eastern Shore during the third full week in July. Fifty-six artists have been accepted out of over two hundred applicants. We artists submit two finished plein air paintings by Friday afternoon for judging and a reception that evening. The exhibition is held at the Academy Art Museum through Sunday, July 26. It is an exciting event and I am very honored to be a part of it again this year.

On May 9, I gave a one-day plein air workshop in Sykesville MD, called a "Paintout Plus" sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters. Basically it was a drawing workshop on how to accurately translate a scene of buildings and transfer it to a canvas or watercolor sheet.

On Saturday, June 20, I will be giving another plein air painting demonstration at the Frederick County (MD) Barnstormers event. I participated last year, and my image of the Franklin Barn is appearing on the posters and brochure announcing the 2009 event.

It probably is no surprise, therefore, that I will begin a PLEIN AIR WORKSHOP, a little differently from the normal way it is done. I plan to have a one-day workshop, once or twice a month, beginning in late June and ending in November. I will choose locations in the Maryland counties of Howard, Montgomery, Frederick and Carroll. It will be all day and include a plein air demonstration in the morning, followed by lunch and everyone painting in the afternoon, and then a critique of the day's paintings. Sound like fun?

If you are interested, e-mail me and indicate if you would want a WEEKEND or WEEKDAY workshop: barbara@barbaranuss.com.

By the way, I won a BEST IN SHOW at the National League of American Pen Women's all media exhibit at the Ratner Museum in Bethesda, MD.
